Current status of ammunition background checks in California
Current Status: Ammunition vendors are conducting background checks and charging $5 for a Basic Check. Online sales with direct delivery are on hold.
3/25/2026: Case was argued and submitted to the En Banc panel. Decision is pending.
8/8/2025: Ninth Circuit orders response to Request for Rehearing within 21 days.
8/7/2025: Attorney General files Request for Rehearing or En Banc.
7/28/2025: Attorney General issues Advisory 166, informing that ammunition background checks remain in effect
7/24/2025: Ninth Circuit issues its published Opinion, striking down California's ammunition background check law.
